Elections Governance and Human Rights in Africa

O'Brien Kaaba, Lecturer and Assistant Dean for Research in the School of Law at the University of Zambia and Senior Research Fellow at the Southern African Institute for Policy and Research will visit MCC speak on Elections Governance and Human Rights in Africa.  

Africa has a regional framework setting the norms for elections, governance and human rights. Although democracy is more than elections, elections are the most visible symbol of democracy. Often times, however, public participation in elections is hampered by violation of fundamental human rights, raising questions about the legitimacy of elections. Is the African region’s normative framework adequate to redress such challenges? This talk will be interactive and share the existing African regional frameworks (and their weaknesses) for redressing shortcomings in the democratic process and attendant violation of human rights
